The face of social interactions

One of the biggest advances of the past decade isn’t a hand held item; rather, it’s an online website. Facebook has revolutionized the way we interact with friends, family, and businesses. Not only can we chat with our aunts and uncles in California, but we can make friends with individuals in Australia or Africa.Over the course of six years, Facebook has taken the lead in the social networking industry. Before there was Facebook, MySpace was the most popular social site; however, the old network has started to dwindle, and Tom (MySpace creator) is close to becoming his only online friend.Mark Zuckerberg, the network’s founder, started working on the Facebook concept in 2003. Zuckerberg was a Harvard sophomore then, and the initial site (Facemash) compared Harvard students by their looks. The site wasn’t actually legal, and the student was close to being expelled; luckily, nothing came of the incident. From Facemash, Zuckerberg found the inspiration for his next creation, and Facebook was born February of the following year.Originally Facebook was designed for Harvard students only. It wasn’t until later that the site was opened to other American and Canadian universities and that students could join using their college accounts. Now the site is available to users outside of universities, too; the website’s expansion has led to roughly 500 million users in 2010.Facebook is one of the most widely used sites around the world. While Zuckerberg didn’t create the social network, he certainly kept it popular.
