Healthier Living Apps
We wrote earlier about Wii Fit and how it is an increasingly popular bit of fun technology as each New Year rolls around and people get back on board with their health and fitness goals. We thought we should also take a look at some Apps that Rachel Meltzer Warren, MS, RD from Shape magazine recently reviewed as well, since an “App a day might just keep the doctor away.”BEST APPS TO EAT BETTER
- Tap and Track calculates how many calories you should be eating based on your activity level.
- Google Goggles snaps a picture of a food label to your Smartphone and the app then tells you everything you need to (yes, need to) know about the product.
BEST APPS TO EXERCISE MORE
- Map My Fitness lets you share and compare your fitness stats with others around the world via a GPS that monitors hikes, bike rides and other activities to track duration, speed, distance, etc.
- Bodyfate is a workout/video game combination that lets you program specifics like your fitness level, the duration you want to work out, the type of equipment being used, etc., and then it creates fun exercises to keep you challenged.
BEST APPS TO IMPROVE OVERALL HEALTH
- DrinkTracker will let you enter your statistics concerning body weight, how much you’ve consumed, and over what period of time, and it will estimate your blood alcohol content (key word: estimate) so you’ll know if it’s time to relinquish your keys in favor of a cab.
- White Noise is a wonderful tool to use to drown out bothersome and stressful noises when you may want to most relax, unwind, or meditate. Options include light rain with birds to crickets chirping in blissful union.
There are a ton more out there as you can imagine (rumor has it that Microsoft has programmers dialed in to release 100 new Apps a day — spanning a vast range of topics). You can bet if you’ve thought of it or wished it was available it’s definitely on the horizon!
